Can Uber and Bolt Drivers Get Shariah-Compliant Insurance in South Africa?
If you drive for Uber or Bolt in South Africa and you’re looking for a Shariah-compliant insurance product, you’ve probably asked the question:
“Can I insure my vehicle under an Islamic insurance policy?”
It’s a fair question. The answer today is simple: not as a standard product. But the reason why is far more interesting than most people realise.
Shariah-compliant insurance in South Africa: the harder problem is pricing the risk
Many people assume Islamic insurance providers don’t want to insure Uber or Bolt drivers. That is not what we found.
From the Takaful material we reviewed, the practical difficulty appears to be risk pooling and pricing rather than religious restriction. The religious position is a matter for a recognised Shariah authority, not for us to determine.
Takaful is built on the idea that members contribute to a common pool, based on the concept of tabarru, a mutual donation, and that pool is used to help members who suffer a covered loss. Claims are paid from that shared pool rather than by a commercial insurer taking on the risk itself, which is the key difference between Takaful and conventional insurance.
That model relies on being able to price the risk in the pool with reasonable confidence. This is where e-hailing work becomes the harder problem.
Gig economy work, including ride-hailing, is widely recognised as difficult for insurers to underwrite. Drivers work fluctuating hours, and a personal vehicle can shift between private and commercial use several times a day.
Insurers, and the data they rely on, often struggle to keep up, which is part of why standard personal car policies typically exclude driving for hire in the first place. For a Takaful pool specifically, that same unpredictability makes it harder to work out a fair, shared contribution across members.
Conventional e-hailing cover does exist in South Africa. TaxiSure’s e-hailing cover is one example, though it is not Shariah-compliant.
Where this cover already exists
Shariah-compliant e-hailing cover isn’t unheard of everywhere. In more developed Islamic finance markets such as Malaysia, e-hailing Takaful endorsements already exist, for example Zurich Malaysia’s Z-Driver Takaful e-hailing add-on, which covers the vehicle, third-party liability, and fare-paying passengers, subject to that product’s own terms and exclusions.
The one South African Takaful provider whose public product range we reviewed lists commercial motor cover, but nothing specific for e-hailing.
Worth noting: a website not listing a product isn’t proof it doesn’t exist, so this is a question worth putting to a provider directly rather than taking as final. Either way, it points to a market that hasn’t developed this product yet, not one where it can’t be done.
We’re exploring something new for Uber and Bolt drivers.
We want to hear from Uber and Bolt drivers
If a Shariah-compliant, Takaful, insurance product was designed specifically for Uber and Bolt drivers in South Africa, would you be interested?
At the moment, these products are generally not available because e-hailing presents unique insurance challenges. But with enough interest and the right risk-sharing model, could that change?
Where do you stand?
- Yes, I would definitely consider it.
- Maybe, I’d like to know more.
- No, conventional insurance suits me.
- I’m not an Uber or Bolt driver, but I support having the option.
If you’re a Yes or a Maybe, tell us
- Do you drive Uber, Bolt, inDrive, or another platform?

We’re not selling a product
We’re trying to find out whether there’s enough interest to build something we could not find offered in South Africa.
Your feedback will help us understand whether there is real demand for this.
Any Takaful product would need to be underwritten by a licensed insurer and certified as Shariah-compliant by a recognised Shariah supervisory authority. TaxiSure is a licensed intermediary and cannot itself determine Shariah compliance. We are only gauging demand at this stage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Shariah-compliant insurance available for Uber and Bolt drivers in South Africa right now?
Not as a standard product.
Why isn’t Shariah-compliant insurance available for Uber and Bolt drivers yet?
The difficulty appears to sit elsewhere. Takaful works by pooling members’ contributions to cover losses, and that model relies on being able to price the risk in the pool fairly. E-hailing work, with its fluctuating hours and shifting between personal and commercial use, is a genuinely hard risk to pool, in Takaful and conventional insurance alike.
Is this about religious restrictions on insuring e-hailing drivers?
Not from what we have found. The difficulty appears to sit in risk pooling and pricing. The religious position is a matter for a recognised Shariah authority.
Does Shariah-compliant e-hailing cover exist anywhere in the world?
Yes. In more developed Takaful markets such as Malaysia, e-hailing Takaful endorsements are already available from providers like Zurich Malaysia, subject to that product’s own terms and exclusions. In South Africa, the provider whose public product range we reviewed doesn’t list an equivalent product, though that’s worth confirming directly rather than treating a website as the final word.
Is TaxiSure launching a Shariah-compliant product for Uber and Bolt drivers?
Not yet. TaxiSure is exploring whether there’s enough interest to build one. This is not a product launch.
How can I share my view on this?
Drivers can WhatsApp TaxiSure with which platform they drive for (Uber, Bolt, inDrive, or another), their operating city, and their biggest insurance frustration today.
